Feeding Infants: Choice-Specific Considerations, Parental Obligation, and Pragmatic Satisficing

چکیده

Abstract Health institutions recommend that young infants be exclusively breastfed on demand, and it is widely held parents who can breastfeed have an obligation to do so. This has been challenged in recent philosophical work, especially by Fiona Woollard. Woollard’s work critically engages with two distinct views of parental might ground such obligation—based maximal benefit avoidance significant harm—to reject breastfeed. While agreeing substantive conclusion, this paper (drawing discussion the ‘right rear’) argues there are several more moderate which also thought obligation. We first show result not from a general maximally one’s child, but what we call ‘choice-specific’ obligations maximise within particular activities. then develop idea through obligation—the Dual Interest view, Best Custodian view—to before showing how both these fail. Finally, argue only no children, often morally right Since much advice health issue implies exclusive breastfeeding demand best option for all families, our argument drives feeding debate forward misrepresents parents’ moral potentially harmful ways.

A Calculus of Pragmatic Obligation

We present a qualitative, decision-theoretic account for statements of the form: "You ought to do A, if C". We show that adding a qualitative causal theory (in the form of a graph) as part of an epistemic state is sufficient to facilitate the analysis of action sequences, their consequences, their interaction with observations, their expected utilities and, hence, the assertability of condition...

A Satisficing Choice Model

While the assumption of utility-maximizing consumers has been challenged for decades, empirical applications of alternative choice rules are still very recent. We add to this growing body of literature by proposing a model based on Simon’s idea of a “satisficing” decision maker. In contrast to previous models (including recent models implementing alternative choice rules), satisficing depends o...

A satisficing algorithm for pragmatic conditionals

In a recent Mind & Society article, Evans (2005) argues for the social and communicative function of conditional statements. In a related article, we argue for satisficing algorithms for mapping conditional statements onto social domains (LópezRousseau and Ketelaar, 2004). The purpose of the present commentary is to integrate these two arguments by proposing a revised pragmatic cues algorithm f...

Pragmatic considerations

Current knowledge acquisition practices place undue restrictions on the issues placed under consideration when they are applied in an organisational context. This paper reviews a number of such techniques and explores their limitations for many `real world' business problems. Managerial and administrative problem solving, in particular, predicate a less obtrusive and more interpretive methodolo...

Success From Satisficing and Imitation: Entrepreneurs’ Location Choice and Implications

This paper presents new data on entrepreneurs’ self-described decision processes 5 when choosing where to locate, based on scripted interviews with 49 well-placed business 6 owners and senior managers in charge of location choice. Consideration sets are surprisingly 7 small, especially among those who are successful. According to entrepreneurs’ own accounts, 8 locations are frequently discovere...
